📖 Scripture of the Day:

Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

"When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. — For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. — So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, 'Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?' He responded, 'Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition.' He summoned the crowd again and said to them, 'Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.' From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile."

🙏 Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help us to purify our hearts and align our actions with Your commandments. Remove from within us all that defiles and distances us from You. May we worship You not only with our lips but with sincere hearts devoted to Your will. Amen.

✨ Reflection:

In today's Gospel, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes about their focus on external rituals rather than the condition of their hearts. He emphasizes that true defilement comes from within – from thoughts and actions that are contrary to God's will. This passage calls us to introspection, urging us to examine the state of our own hearts and to seek purity and righteousness from within.

🕊️ Saint of the Day:

Saint Giles, Abbot

Saint Giles Pray For Us!
  • Biography: St. Giles, also known as Aegidius, was a 7th-century Athenian who lived as a hermit in the south of France. Renowned for his piety and miracles, he eventually founded a monastery that became a center of pilgrimage.

  • Significance: St. Giles is the patron saint of the physically disabled, beggars, abandoned people, the mentally ill and blacksmiths. His life of humility, prayer, and service to the marginalized reflects the Gospel's call to care for the least among us.

  • Prayer: "St. Giles, humble servant of God, inspire us to live lives of prayer and humility. Help us to serve those in need and to seek God's grace in all we do. Intercede for us that we may grow in holiness and be instruments of God's love and mercy."

📚 Catholic Teaching:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2517) teaches that "The heart is the seat of moral personality: 'Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication…' The struggle against carnal concupiscence entails purifying the heart and practicing temperance." This aligns with today’s Gospel, which calls us to focus on inner purity and moral integrity rather than mere external observances.

🔍 Personal Growth:

Consider areas in your life where you may be more focused on external appearances than on the true state of your heart. Are there habits or thoughts that need purification? Strive to align your heart with God's commandments and seek His grace to overcome internal defilements. Emulate St. Giles by living a life of humility, prayer, and service to those in need.

God knows your heart!

🌿 Spiritual Practice:

  1. Examination of Conscience: Spend time in quiet reflection, asking God to reveal areas in your heart that need purification. Confess these areas in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

  2. Acts of Service: Follow the example of St. Giles by performing an act of kindness for someone in need today. This could be a small gesture of help or a more significant act of service.

  3. Daily Prayer: Incorporate a prayer of purification into your daily routine, asking God to cleanse your heart and lead you in righteousness.
